Microsoft integrates Fabric analytics with transactional databases
Microsoft is introducing new transactional database systems to its Fabric analytics and data lake ecosystem to support AI users.
Microsoft revealed this week at Build that it was integrating Cosmos DB and SQL Server to Fabric, its analytics and data lake platform launched in June 2023.
Microsoft stated adding Cosmos DB’s global secondary index to Fabric will eliminate the requirement to scan all operational data in Azure Cosmos DB. The company said this would speed up searches, reduce latency, and protect transactional performance.
The Register reported that Azure data corporate vice president Arun Ulag said the idea is to let customers bring AI and analytics workloads closer to transactional data by sharing Apache Parquet in the data lake environment, which Microsoft calls OneLake and uses the open source Delta Lake format.
Cosmos DB is an excellent location to store your whole product catalog, and you want to offer suggestions while people browse your website. He explained that by default, Fabric-built SQL Server, Cosmos DB, data warehouse, and data lake data resides on OneLake.
“All data is in open source, Apache Parquet, Delta Lake format, so it’s always current for machine learning models. Not need to make copies. No need to move data. OneLake allows direct machine learning model building.”
Gartner senior director, information management and analytics, Aaron Rosenbaum, said the move continued a trend of simplifying and automating data management infrastructure integration.
