Adding Transparent Text to an Image with Photoshop

Here is a tutorial about how to add transparent text to your image by using Photoshop’s layer effects. You need to follow these steps for adding transparent text to your image.

  • First of all you need start by opening your image into the Photoshop.
  • Now in order to add the text you are required to select the Tyoe Tool from the toolbar.
  • Now in the Options bar you are required to select your font. You can use any font but a larger as well as thicker will be ideal.
  • Now you need to set the type size to 72 pt which means we are starting with the largest preset size.
  • Now you need to select the color for your type by clicking the color swatch.
  • Since we are going to make the text transparent the color does not matter, but select one that is easy to see as you are going to add the text to the image.
  • Now click OK and close the color picker.

Add your Text:

  • Now click on the document and then add your text.
  • In order to accept it just click the checkmark in the Options Bar.
  • Resize and reposition the text with Free Transform
  • In order to resize the text and move it into place you need to use Photoshop’s Free Transform command.
  • First of all go up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar and select Free Transform.
  • Fotr resizing the text click and deag any of the handles.
  • For repositioning the text you need to click and drag inside the Free Transform box.
  • You can drag down to the center my text in front of the image.
  • In order to accept it and close Free Transform you need to click the checkmark in the Option Bar.
  • Now in the Layers panel the text will appear on the type layer above the image.
  • Lower the Type layer’s Fill to 0 percent:
  • Now the text has been added now you can make the text transparent. One of the method is by lowering the layer’s Opacity value and the other one is by lowering the Fill value.
  • You can lower the Fill value down to 0 percent.
  • With the Fill value lowered the text disappeared.

Add a Drop Shadow to the Text

  • First of all in the Layers panel you need to click the fx icon at the bottom.
  • Select the Drop Shadow from the list.
  • The options for the drop shadow opn the dialog box of Layer Style.

Angle and Distance:

now you need ti adjust the angle and distance and the simplest way to adjust the angle and distance values if by clicking and dragging inside the document. And tough the text is transparent the shadow is still hiddden behind it revealing the letters.

Opacity:

in order to adjust the opacity you can use the opacity slider. You need to darken the shadow by increasing the opacity to 50%.

Size:

  • You can also soften the shadow edges by increasing the Size value.
  • Add a stroke around the text:
  • for adding the stroke around the text you need to select Stroke from the column on the left. Stroke can e sued for adding border around the letters.
  • You can select Gradient Overlay from the left column
  • You can select a gradient by clicking arrow next to the gradient swatch.
  • Select the Balck, White gradient by double clicking on it’s thumbnail.
  • In order to blend the gradient with the image just modify the blend mode of gradient from Normal to overlay.
  • In order to see the Gradient Overlay effect more clearly you need to turn off the Stroke and Drop Shadow effects by unchecking them.
  • Now turn the Stroke and Drop Shadow back on and click inside their checkboxes again.
  • You can try adding other layer effects and then you can accept what you have by simply clicking on OK to close the Layer Style dialog box.
  • In the Layers panel the effects that has been added to the text appear below the type layer.
  • You can click the visibility icon beside an effect’s name to toggle the effect ON and OFF. You can double click directly on the name to re-open Layer Style dialog box and then edit the effects if required.
  • In the Layers panel you need to press and hold the Ctrl key o your keyboard and then click on the type layer’s thumbnail.
  • In order to select everything except the text you need to invert the selection by going up to the Select menu and selecting Inverse.
  • Now click on yourimage layer in order to select it.
  • Now click the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon.
  • Now select a Solid Color fill layer
  • From the color picker for the fill layer you need to select black for now.
  • Click OK.
  • Now in the Layers panel the fill layers appears between the image and the type layer.
  • In order to blend the color with the image you need to lower the Opacity of the fill layer.
  • With the lowered opacity the image shows through the fill layer.
  • In order to try different color just double click on the fill layer’s color swatch.
  • Now select a new color from the Color Picker or from the image again.

How to Create New Color Gradient in Photoshop

In order to save your precious tine you need to create a new Photoshop document with a white background and add some text on the type layer. You can use Avenir Next Heavy or any other of your own choice.

Add Gradient Overlay Effect to the Text:

In order to add gradient to your text we are going to use Gradient Overlay layer effect.

  • You need to make sure that type layer is select in the Layers panel. Now click the fx icon at the bottom.
  • Select gradient overlay from the list that will appear.

Select Black, White gradient:

The Layer Style dialog box will open the Gradient Overlay options. You can start by selecting Photoshop’s standard black to white gradient and later can edit the colors to create your own custom gradient.

  • In order to select the gradient you are required to click the current gradient’s color swatch.
  • You need to make sure that you have clicked the color swatch itself and not the small arrow located on the right side of the swatch.
  • Now in the Gradient Editor, you need to select the Black, White gradient from presets section at the top. In Photoshop CC 2020 the gradient presets are grouped in the folders and you can find the Black, White gradient in Basic folder.

Edit the gradient colors:

You can see the current gradient colors at the gradient preview bar in the bottom half of the dialog box. If you have selected the Black and White color gradient then the left side of the preview bar will appear as black and the right side will appear as white. These colors can be edited easily by using color stops.

  • If you need to change the black color to something else all you have to do is to double click on the black color stop located below the left side of the preview bar.
  • Now select a new color from the Photoshop’s color picker. You can use any color of your liking. Once the color is selected you can click OK in order to close the Color Picker when you are done.
  • In order to change the white color to some other color just double click on the white color stop located below the right side of the preview bar.
  • Now select a new color from the Color Picker. Once you have select the second color click OK.
  • After selecting both new colors now you have got the new custom gradient.

Set the Location of Each Color to 50%:

whe you will create the new color gradient you will notice that the gradient transition from one to another gradually. In order to create solid color gradient that splits the two colors from the centre just change the location value of each of the color stops.

  • First of all click on the left color stop in order to select it. You need to click just once, dont double click this time.
  • Now you need to change the Location value from 0% to 50% and you will see that the color stop will move below the center of the gradient.
  • Noe click on the right color stop in order to select it.
  • Now change it’s Location value to 50% as well. The two color stops will now overlap in the center and every half is now filled with solid color.

Enhanced Properties Panel in Photoshop

When Photoshop get any update the new features takes the center stage and grab all the attention and on the other hand enhancements to the existing features often go unnoticed. But if you are the one whom efficiency and ease of use are of utmost importance then you should check out the enhancements being made in Properties panel of Photoshop CC 2020.

The Properties panel is the place where you will find all the controls as well as options for any layer that is selected in Layers panel. The options change which depends of the type of layers you are working on. The options until now were very limited but with the CC 2020 update the Properties panel has been enhanced greatly.

The Document Properties in CC 2020

In Photoshop CC 2020 the Properties panel has become very handy and with the background layer selected there are many things that you can do with the documents from the Properties panel. There is a Canvas group, Guides group and a group of Rulers & Grids. It has also got a brand new feature which is known as Quick Actions.

Canvas:

  • You can use Canvas options in order to modify the width or height of the document.
  • Now click the Landscape or Portrait button to modify the orientation of the document. But you need to be careful that this will result in some of your image being clipped.

You have also got the option to change the color mode and bit depth of the document if required.

Rulers & Grids

  • This group has been equipped with the buttons to show or hide the rulers as well as the grid. It has also got a button that opens Photoshop”s Preferences to Transparenccy & Gamut settings.
  • You are also allowed to modify the unit of measurements for the rulers.

Guides:

  • You need to click on the buttons in order to view the guides, lock the guides or turn ON Smart Guides.
  • You can also change the style of guide from solid to dashed lines.

Quick Actions

  • Quick Actions is the brand new feature that has been included in he Properties panel in Photoshop CC 2020.
  • The Quick Actions group provides the buttons to open the size of the image dialog box.
  • Select the Crop Tool and then open the Trim dialog box or you can also rotate the canvas.
